King John's Castle sits on the Shannon in the medieval Englishtown, a genuine Norman castle with drum towers, walls, St Mary's Cathedral and Thomond Bridge around it. Across the river, Newtown Pery is one of the largest intact Georgian grids in Ireland, red-brick terraces that double for Georgian or Victorian city. The Shannon, Ireland's longest river, runs through the centre with bridges and quays.
