A Galway fixer, in plain terms.

Galway is the cultural capital of the west and, since 2014, a UNESCO City of Film, one of only a handful worldwide. That designation is not a slogan: it means a working screen ecosystem in a small city, a resident crew base, a film centre and training pipeline, and the Galway Film Fleadh each July. For an incoming production it translates into more local capacity, and a city genuinely used to having cameras on its streets, than its size would suggest.

Galway City Council handles filming on public streets and property inside the city. Galway County Council covers the county beyond it: Connemara, the coast, the Gaeltacht and the islands. Traffic impact, closures and stunts bring in An Garda Síochána; Connemara National Park interiors bring in the NPWS; state heritage sites bring in the OPW; and the Gaeltacht and island areas involve Údarás na Gaeltachta. Where productions shoot in Galway.

The Latin Quarter is the draw: Shop Street and Quay Street, cobbled and pedestrian, lined with painted shopfronts and buskers, running down to the Spanish Arch and the Corrib where the river meets the sea. It reads as a medieval-to-Georgian European town without leaving Ireland. The Claddagh and the docks give working waterfront, Salthill gives a classic seaside promenade, and Galway Cathedral gives scale.

Then the city opens onto the wild. Connemara is half an hour west and delivers the Twelve Bens, blanket bog, sea inlets, the Sky Road at Clifden, Kylemore Abbey on its lake, and the white-sand beaches of the coast. The Aran Islands sit offshore with stone-walled fields and Iron Age forts. Few bases in Ireland let a unit swing from old-world town to raw Atlantic wilderness as quickly.

This is the reason most productions choose Galway. Connemara is the postcard west of Ireland, and Galway is its only real service base. The Aran Islands are reached by ferry from Rossaveel or a short flight from Connemara Airport, and the binding constraint there is always logistics: ferry capacity for crew, vehicles and kit, small-scale island accommodation, and weather that can close the crossing. We plan the movement and build a contingency window into any island or Connemara schedule so a weather day does not sink the shoot.

Galway carries a real crew and supplier base for its size, kept alive by the City of Film ecosystem, the film centre and the festival season. For larger units we bring Dublin crew and camera packages on the two-and-a-quarter-hour run west, and Shannon Airport an hour and a half south handles international arrivals.
